475 thousand charging columns in Europe with public access and 3 million home infrastructures – ChargeUp’s 2023 data.
“State of the industry Report 2023” is the annual research published by ChargeUp Europe-the association representing the ev-charging industry at the European level.
According to the report, Europe’s public access stations grew by 44 percent over last year.
The data clearly show an uneven distribution across the continent, with the Netherlands; France and Germany together accounting for 60 percent of installed ev-chargers.
European Council adopts new law to increase charging and refueling stations across Europe
Efforts led by AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) are now aimed at implementing the infrastructure to support the European fleet.
According to the most recent updates from the European Council, more charging and refueling stations will be installed throughout Europe to enable the transportation sector to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
New features introduced by the legislation include a focus on the user and simplified access to recharging.
Here are some previews:
- starting in 2025, fast-charging stations for cars and vans with a minimum power of 150kW will have to be installed every 60 km along the EU’s main transport corridors, the so-called “trans-European transport network” (TEN-T).
- Users of electric or hydrogen vehicles should be able to easily pay at charging or refueling points with payment cards or contactless devices, without having to subscribe and with full price transparency.
- Operators of charging or refueling points must provide consumers with comprehensive information electronically about the availability, waiting times, or prices of different stations.

How will these new regulations impact the market for electric cars and charging? Surely the next six months, by which time the regulations are expected to become fully active, will be able to adequately answer that question.
Private, business or home access charging points, 2023 growth
As for private or semi-public access charging points, such as those that make up the entire Prism range, by 2022 they constituted a 3.9 million entity to which must be added the 500 thousand charging points installed in workplaces.
For the future, ChargeUp’s forecast is clear: 5.7 million are expected to be reached by the end of 2023. Looking further out to 2023, the forecast is astounding: 25.7 million home charging points and 5.4 million workplace charging points.
Charging columns in the workplace, the role is crucial
Electric vehicle charging infrastructure installed in workplaces reached an incidence of 10 percent, considering the total installed between public and private.
The analysis conducted by ChargeUp highlights how they are set to play an increasingly crucial role for a large number of users.
Workplace charging is ideal for those who live in apartment buildings and, often, cannot count on a dedicated place for charging. What’s more, this type of installation, caters to environments where cars are stationary for long periods of time during the day. Charging at the workplace thus represents a “smart” solution for managing refueling.
Charging at wallboxes installed in business environments also makes numerous benefits more easily accessible, can be used as a “fringe benefit,” and/or come from renewable sources such as an industrial photovoltaic system.
