Wallbox: how does Solar Mode work and when is it appropriate to use it to recharge the electric car?

The spread of smart wallboxes has fundamentally changed the way electric vehicles are recharged. Today we are not only talking about speed and convenience, but also about smart consumption management.

The spread of smart wallboxes has fundamentally changed the way electric vehicles are recharged. Today we are not only talking about speed and convenience, but also about smart consumption management. One of the most innovative and in-demand features is Solar Mode, which allows you to harness the energy produced by your own photovoltaic system to power your electric car.

Understanding how this mode works and in what cases it is worth using it is crucial for those who want to maximize savings and minimize their withdrawal from the electricity grid.

What is the Solar Mode of a wallbox

Solar Mode is a setting that allows the wallbox to charge the electric car only with renewable energy generated by home photovoltaics. Unlike traditional charging, which draws directly from the grid, Solar Mode uses only the surplus of solar energy, that is, the portion that is not absorbed by appliances or other loads in the home. The result is 100% green charging, which can go as far as zeroing the use of energy purchased from the grid.

How Solar Mode Technically Works

The entire process is done automatically through advanced monitoring systems

  • Consumption tracking: using smart meters or ammeter sensors, the wallbox measures PV production and household consumption in real time.
  • Surplus detection: the system recognizes how much solar energy is available and not being used by the house.
  • Dynamic charging management: if there is sufficient surplus, the wallbox starts charging; in case of reduced production (cloudiness, evening, appliances turned on). Recharging can: suspend temporarily, resume when surplus returns, or supplement missing energy from the grid, if set in hybrid mode.

This logic is part of photovoltaic smart charging, which optimizes the use of the energy produced by one’s system in real time.

When it is appropriate to use Solar Mode

The effectiveness of Solar Mode varies according to charging habits and system characteristics, but in many situations it can offer a real advantage. It is particularly useful during the middle hours of the day, when PV reaches peak production, and becomes ideal for those who work from home or have the option of leaving their car parked in the garage during sunny hours.

If the system is equipped with storage batteries, the benefits also extend into the evening or night, because the stored energy can be used for recharging. In any case, the most interesting aspect is the possibility of maximizing self-consumption: directly using the energy produced by one’s system means making the most of it, with a higher economic return than energy fed into the grid.

However, when the main need is to recharge quickly at times of low solar production, it may be more practical to choose a mixed mode, which combines PV and grid power.

The advantages of charging in Solar Mode

The benefits of Solar Mode are reflected both economically and environmentally. By using the surplus from one’s photovoltaic system, it is possible to significantly reduce, or even eliminate, the costs associated with charging the vehicle, turning the energy produced into direct savings on the utility bill.

At the same time, the car is powered by renewable energy, contributing to truly zero-impact mobility. Added to this is intelligent and flexible management, which allows the user to set activation thresholds, priorities and grid usage modes according to his or her needs. In this way, every kilowatt-hour generated by the PV system is maximized.
